Energy savings by using a bimetallic rail range up to 75% compared to a steel rail (taking into account the difference in the heating coefficient). The difference in the cost of material resources for the installation of a metal and bimetallic rail is more than RUB 3 mln. At the same time, the payback period for 1 km of a bimetallic conductor rail is only roughly 8.8 years.
The global practice of using bimetallic conductor rails began with testing of the PVC protective box system in Berlin in 1965. Use of this type of product spread through the transport infrastructure of Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Turkey, Spain and other countries.
