04.03.2024 - Aluminium Association
On February 29, the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Aluminium Producers, Suppliers, and Consumers (Aluminium Association) took place as part of the 'Days of Aluminium' at the Russia International Exhibition and Forum. During the General Meeting, a report on the operations of the Aluminium Association for 2023 was presented. The report included projects aimed at increasing aluminium consumption in various sectors of the economy. The main trends in the development of the industry were also discussed.
As noted at the General Meeting, the volume of aluminium production in Russia last year reached 1.2 million tonnes. The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of aluminium, accounting for 25% of all metal consumption. Other major consumers include packaging (also 25%), energy (16%), and transportation (11%). The main challenges that the domestic aluminium industry has faced recently include low rates of recovery in domestic demand, disruptions in trade and logistics channels, and a sharp reduction in export supplies due to the implementation of restrictive measures (by almost four times over the past two years). Despite this, there is reason to talk about a gradual recovery of the domestic market. Over the past year, the output of finished and semi-finished aluminium products increased by 11.5%, although it has not yet reached the levels achieved in 2021. At the same time, the country recorded a record amount of domestic aluminium product consumption, surpassing even the levels of 2021. Overall, since 2016, the domestic market has seen a more than 60% increase in the consumption of domestic aluminium products. This rise is due to the growth of demand and the process of replacing imported products with domestic alternatives.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Aluminium Association. They spoke about their work in several key areas: driving aluminium consumption in the domestic market; implementing a standardisation programme; supporting import substitution of semi-finished and finished products; facilitating export and international relations; implementing measures to protect and support the market; enhancing the environmental friendliness of production and materials; training personnel for high-tech industries; organising congresses and exhibitions; and conducting public relations activities.
The meeting participants made a number of organisational decisions. The most important one was to include 12 new members in the Association: Profilegib; Alumsill LLC; Sofos JSC; Ural Aluminium Company; Zavod Vysotnykh Konstruktsiy LLC; 13 Element LLC; Prosto Tent LLC; Prime Top LLC; NPO Novaya Konstruktsiya LLC; Magnitogorsk Trade and Production Company LLC; Savelo-Group+ LLC; Gravis Company LLC. Today, the Aluminium Association includes more than 140 companies and organisations, accounting for 80% of the domestic market for downstream aluminium products.
