The 'Clockwork Orange 2024' 29th annual international student competition has wrapped up. This event is dedicated to finding talented designers among graduates from the leading educational institutions in Russia and the CIS. This time, more than 300 entries were submitted to the prestigious packaging design competition. Some of them focused on designing aluminium containers. The Aluminium Association has been a member of the jury for the second year in a row.
Environmentally sound packaging is a key trend in the consumer goods market. Aluminium is a fully recyclable material that provides some of the most popular types of packaging on the market. By the end of 2023, the total volume of aluminium can manufacturing in the EAEU exceeded 10 billion roubles. In March 2024, a new plant for the manufacturing of aluminium cans was launched in Ulyanovsk. The company behind the project with a capacity of 1.5 billion cans is Arnest Packaging Solutions.
The ability to apply a bright and unique design to cans gives beverage manufacturers the opportunity to connect with consumers on a deeper level. This design serves as an additional tool for engaging with customers.
The Aluminium Association supports the development of eco-friendly packaging and its popularisation among a new generation of designers. This year, four works created using aluminium can design were awarded special prizes from the jury:
First place: Oksana Korshunova (Moscow Polytechnic University, Favorsky Institute of Graphics and Book Art; 'Nalivnoe Yablochko' spiced cider brand packaging).
Second place: Anna Davydova (College of the Russian State University of Design and Applied Arts; Dell'arte lemonade brand and packaging series).
Third place: Daria Nemova (Turgenev Oryol State University; 'Butterbeer' lemonade brand packaging).
A special prize was awarded to the 'Aluminium Packaging for Energy Drinks' project by Nikita Trushin from the Razumovsky Moscow State University of Technology and Management.
The 'Clockwork Orange' student competition, organised by the 'Package and Packaging' magazine and Double V Group, has been a platform for young talents to showcase their skills in packaging design for years. It gives students a chance to show off their skills and ideas and receive recognition and support from professionals in the industry. The award ceremony for the winners of the 29th 'Clockwork Orange' competition will take place in the fall at the National Institute of Design. The Organising Committee also plans to publish an illustrated catalog with the winning works. This will help preserve the memory of the event and inspire future participants to participate in similar competitions.
'It was not easy to pick the winners in this year's competition. The works presented by the participants were all top-quality and met the market requirements. It's worth noting the attention to detail shown by the participants. In particular, they understand the importance of incorporating national motifs into the design of packaging. The market also has a demand for vintage designs and graphical art. The fact that students include the category of beverages in their works is wonderful for manufacturers. We are confident that the new competencies of the next generation of designers will be in high demand in the market,' said Natalya Kudenkova, head of the Consumer Goods sector of the Aluminium Association.
