18.12.2023 - Aluminium Association
On 18 December in New Delhi, the Aluminium Association, in collaboration with the Association of Aluminium Processors of India, ASMA, held a seminar entitled Cooperation for Sustainable Development. The event was organised as a follow-up to the business mission of Russian aluminium companies in April, to expand the export potential of domestic aluminium products.
The seminar participants shared their views on current issues of bilateral cooperation, including trade policy and access to the Indian market. The event was attended by the representatives of the aluminium associations from both countries and major Indian aluminium consumers.
Artem Asatur, Vice Chairperson of the Aluminium Association, talked about the Association’s activities. He highlighted areas of cooperation with India, focusing on educational, research, and engineering cooperation, and increasing aluminium consumption across all industries. Artem Asatur also introduced the Association’s initiative within the B20-G20 committees for the liberalisation of trade in low-carbon products. This initiative aims to expand trade in aluminium manufactured using renewable energy sources. This will reduce the carbon footprint across the value chain and provide an alternative to the introduction of the carbon border adjustment mechanism that Russian and Indian energy-intensive sectors will face in export markets shortly.
Following the seminar, the aluminium associations of Russia and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Its purpose is to facilitate mutually beneficial cooperation in the development of aluminium production and consumption in both countries, to establish a global dialogue on aluminium industry issues as an alternative to protectionism, and to promote fair competition in the international trade of aluminium and aluminium products. Russia and India will also cooperate in organising exhibitions, seminars and round tables, facilitating information exchange and networking, preparing proposals for expanding cooperation in the aluminium industry for Russian-Indian intergovernmental consultations, etc.
