BMSTU was started as an independent educational institution on October 5, 1826, when the Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna issued the Dictate on the establishment of 'large workshops for different crafts, with bedrooms, with a dining room and other necessities' by the Moscow Orphanage in the German Quarter and the relocation of all craft pupils from the Orphanage.
Many renowned scholars and specialists have graduated from the Bauman University: the academicians Andrey Tupolev, Sergey Korolev and many other aircraft and missile design engineers; academician Nikolay Dollezhali, author of the design of the atomic reactor, academician Alexander Tselikov – metallurgy, academician Sergey Lebedev, author of the design of the first Soviet computer.
Education in the BMSTU is conducted on 19 full-time attendance faculties. There are postgraduate and doctoral studies, two specialised lyceums. BMSTU is training more than 19,000 students in almost all modern machinery and instrumentation. More than 320 PhD and about 2,000 candidates of science are conducting scientific and educational work. The main structural units of the Bauman University are the scientific and educational complexes that have a faculty and research Institute. They are eight (please see the column on the right). In addition, vocational training is provided at the industry-based faculties created on the basis of the major production facilities, companies and institutions of the defence and industrial complex located in Moscow and Greater Moscow Area: Reutov, Krasnogorsk and Korolev, and also at the Kaluga branch of the university. MSTU gained a unique experience in the national system of higher education for the training of students with hearing disabilities, which is carried out at the University since 1934.
