The Federal State Unitary Enterprise ‘Central Science-Research Institute of Structural Materials ‘Promethey’ named after academic I.V. Gorychin of National Research Centre ‘Kurchatov Institute’ (TSNII KM ‘Promethey’) is one of the leading material science centres in the field of developing metallic and non-metallic structural materials and technologies for their production.
The aluminium alloys and materials based on them, created at FSUE TSNII KM Promethey are used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing, railway transport, transport systems, oil and gas storage and extraction, and cryogenic technology.
The predominant area for the creation of aluminium materials is domestic shipbuilding; development in the field of thermal non-consolidating aluminium-magnesium alloys. Thanks to their high resistance to corrosion in the sea and good weldability, these alloys are prospective materials for use in low temperatures of up to -196°С, successfully competing with steel and titanium alloys. They are essential materials for building ships with dynamic principles of support (hydrofoils and hovercrafts), high-speed boats and yachts.
Good prospects and current areas of focus are the development of new types of lightweight panels made from aluminium alloys, which constitute welded, flat, thin-walled panels and structures from flat rolled products and pressed profile of 3mm thickness.
As a result of successful scientific and technical work by specialists at FSUE ‘TSNII KM ‘Promethey’, the development of new marine aluminium alloys, modern technologies of production of progressive types of semi-finished product and highly-efficient welding methods are contemporary and popular, and fields for their application in various sectors of industry are constantly expanding.
